Project Description
This project focused on creating a clean, modern outdoor living space for a newly constructed home, where the backyard initially lacked usable hardscape and defined transition areas. The homeowners wanted a patio that felt substantial and permanent—something that matched the architectural style of the home while maximizing usable square footage for entertaining, relaxing, and everyday outdoor use.
The centerpiece of the project is a large, elevated paver patio constructed directly off the rear of the home. Because the finished patio sits slightly above the surrounding lawn, the design required integrated retaining walls that serve both structural and aesthetic purposes. These walls define the patio edge, manage grade changes, and provide informal seating without cluttering the space with furniture or railings.
The patio surface itself was built using a modern gray concrete paver system laid in a structured, repeating pattern. The clean lines and subtle color variation complement the home’s exterior finishes while maintaining a neutral tone that allows flexibility in furniture and décor choices. A darker border paver was installed around the perimeter to frame the patio visually and reinforce clean edges—a small detail that significantly elevates the finished look.
One of the challenges of this project was maintaining proper elevation relative to the home’s rear doors while ensuring adequate drainage away from the foundation. The patio height was carefully calculated to allow comfortable step-down transitions without creating trip hazards or water collection points. This attention to elevation also ensured seamless integration with the existing railing and stair access points.
The seating and retaining walls were constructed using modular concrete wall block with matching capstones. These walls provide a strong visual boundary while maintaining a low profile that preserves sightlines across the yard. Capstones were set with consistent overhangs and aligned carefully to maintain straight, uniform runs—an important detail in modern hardscape design, where imperfections are more noticeable.
In addition to the main patio, the project included a side yard stepping-stone walkway designed to provide functional access between the front and rear of the home. Rather than installing a continuous concrete or paver path, large-format concrete slabs were spaced evenly and set within a gravel base. This approach creates a clean, minimalist look while allowing for drainage and reducing the overall footprint of hardscape in the side yard.
This walkway also serves a practical purpose, providing access to utility areas and equipment without tracking mud or damaging the lawn. Stone spacing was carefully planned to ensure comfortable stride length, and each slab was leveled individually to prevent rocking or settlement over time.
Throughout the project, emphasis was placed on longevity and performance. All excavation was completed to appropriate depths, with compacted aggregate bases installed in lifts to prevent future settling. Edges were restrained to maintain alignment, and final grading around the patio ensured positive drainage away from the structure.
The finished result is a backyard that feels complete and intentional—no longer an empty lawn, but a usable extension of the home. The elevated patio provides a strong foundation for outdoor living, while the integrated walls and clean geometry create a polished, modern aesthetic. Combined with the functional side yard walkway, the project delivers both form and function, adding lasting value and usability to the property.
Detailed Project Scope
Site Evaluation & Layout
The project began with a detailed evaluation of existing grades, drainage patterns, and home elevation. Layout lines were established for the patio footprint, wall locations, stair transitions, and side yard walkway alignment. All work areas were clearly marked prior to excavation to ensure accurate dimensions and clean edges.
Excavation & Base Preparation
Excavation was completed for the full patio footprint and wall foundations, removing unsuitable soil and organic material. A compacted aggregate base was installed in multiple lifts to achieve a stable foundation capable of supporting the raised patio and wall systems. Special attention was given to base depth along the home to ensure proper drainage and frost protection.
Retaining & Seating Wall Construction
Structural wall block systems were installed to form the perimeter of the elevated patio. Footings were properly leveled and compacted before wall installation began. Each course was aligned and secured according to manufacturer specifications to ensure long-term stability. Matching capstones were cut and installed with consistent spacing and overhangs to provide a finished appearance.
Paver Patio Installation
Concrete pavers were dry-laid and adjusted to create a consistent pattern across the patio surface. A contrasting border paver was installed to frame the patio and reinforce edge definition. Pavers were set to uniform elevations, with joints filled and compacted to lock the system together while allowing for seasonal movement.
Side Yard Walkway Installation
Large-format concrete stepping stones were installed over a compacted gravel base. Each slab was individually leveled, with gravel joints filled and compacted to maintain stone position. Spacing was carefully measured to ensure comfort and visual consistency along the full length of the walkway.
Drainage & Final Grading
Final grading was completed around the patio perimeter to direct water away from the home and hardscape surfaces. Transitions between lawn and hardscape were smoothed and prepared for turf restoration. All drainage considerations were verified before final cleanup.
Final Detailing & Cleanup
All surfaces were cleaned of construction debris. Final adjustments were made to caps, edges, and joint fill. Excess materials were removed, and disturbed lawn areas were restored, leaving the site clean and ready for use.
