This project involved the complete transformation of a sloped residential backyard into a fully integrated, multi-level outdoor living space built with natural stone and precision masonry. The goal was to create a functional yet refined environment that could accommodate entertaining, cooking, relaxing, and year-round use, while also addressing the site’s elevation challenges and drainage needs.

The finished space centers around a large natural stone patio laid in an irregular pattern that adds movement and visual depth while maintaining clean transitions between levels. The stone selection features subtle variations in tone that complement both the surrounding landscape and the home’s exterior, allowing the patio to feel like a natural extension of the property rather than an add-on.

One of the defining features of this project is the custom-built stone fireplace. Constructed using full-bed natural stone with a masonry firebox and chimney system, the fireplace serves as both a functional heat source and a strong architectural focal point. The proportions were carefully considered so the fireplace feels substantial without overpowering the space. A stone hearth and mantle provide usable surface space while reinforcing the handcrafted nature of the installation.

Surrounding the patio are multiple levels of stone retaining and seating walls. These walls were designed to manage grade changes across the yard while doubling as functional seating and visual borders. Integrated stone caps provide comfortable seating height and create clean horizontal lines that guide the eye across the space. The walls also help frame different zones within the patio, subtly separating dining, cooking, and lounging areas without the need for railings or barriers.

A custom stone cooking station was incorporated into the wall system, including a built-in area for a ceramic grill and a dedicated wood storage niche. This allowed outdoor cooking to feel intentional and permanent, rather than temporary or cluttered. The grill station was positioned for both accessibility and safety, with adequate clearance from the fireplace and seating areas.

Stone steps and tiered landings connect the different elevations of the patio, ensuring smooth transitions and safe movement throughout the space. Each step was carefully set to consistent riser heights and tread depths, with solid stone caps to reduce wear and improve longevity. These transitions were especially important given the natural slope of the property and the desire to make the space usable for all ages.

Drainage was a critical consideration throughout the project. Channel drains and concealed grading were integrated into the patio layout to direct water away from the home and prevent pooling. This not only protects the structure but also extends the life of the stonework by reducing freeze-thaw stress and erosion beneath the patio base.

The surrounding retaining walls were constructed with both structural integrity and long-term durability in mind. Proper base preparation, reinforced cores where required, and controlled backfill ensured that the walls could withstand soil pressure and seasonal movement. The stone veneer was installed with careful attention to joint consistency and stone placement, creating a natural but intentional appearance.
