Project Description
This project focused on transforming the unused space beneath an elevated deck into a functional, finished outdoor living area that could be used year-round. The homeowners wanted a durable surface that felt intentional and permanent, while also improving access, drainage, and usability beneath the structure.
The completed patio features a professionally installed paver system that extends beneath the deck and outward into the surrounding yard. The pavers were laid in a structured pattern using complementary earth-tone colors, giving the space visual warmth while remaining neutral enough to work with the existing brick foundation and natural wood deck framing.
One of the primary challenges of this project was working around the existing deck support posts and staircase. Rather than treating these as obstacles, the layout was designed to integrate them cleanly into the patio footprint. The pavers were carefully cut and aligned around each post, maintaining consistent joint spacing and clean lines throughout the space.
A raised paver platform was constructed beneath the deck to create a defined transition between elevations. This platform serves both functional and visual purposes, allowing for easier movement beneath the stairs while also breaking up the space into usable zones. The elevation change was addressed with solid masonry risers built from retaining wall block, providing a durable edge that resists shifting and erosion.
Segmental retaining walls were installed along the rear and side edges of the patio to manage grade changes and stabilize the surrounding soil. These walls also help frame the patio, giving the under-deck area a more finished and enclosed feel without making it feel boxed in. The block color was selected to complement the paver tones and blend naturally with the existing landscape.
Drainage was a key consideration, especially given the shaded environment beneath the deck. Proper grading was established beneath the paver base to direct water away from the home’s foundation and prevent pooling. The finished surface slopes subtly but effectively, ensuring long-term performance and reducing maintenance concerns.
The stair landing was carefully integrated into the patio design. A clean paver transition at the base of the stairs provides a stable and slip-resistant surface, improving safety and usability. The raised landing beneath the stairs also helps visually anchor the staircase, making it feel connected to the patio rather than floating above it.
This project significantly expanded the usable square footage of the home’s outdoor space. What was once bare soil beneath the deck is now a clean, level, and inviting patio that can be used for storage, seating, or entertaining. The materials were selected specifically for durability in shaded environments, ensuring the space will hold up to moisture, foot traffic, and seasonal changes.
Overall, the finished under-deck patio adds both functional value and visual structure to the property. The careful integration of masonry, elevation changes, and existing wood framing resulted in a space that feels cohesive, practical, and built to last.
