Project Description

This project involved the complete reconstruction of an aging front entry staircase and surrounding masonry in a dense urban residential setting. The existing stairs and retaining walls had deteriorated over time, creating safety concerns and detracting from the home’s curb appeal. The objective was to rebuild the entryway with durable, long-lasting materials while preserving the character of the neighborhood and improving overall access to the home.

The centerpiece of the project is the newly constructed masonry staircase featuring dark stone treads and clean, uniform risers. Each step was carefully laid to maintain consistent rise and run, improving safety and comfort while ascending to the main entrance. The stone selection provides excellent slip resistance and visual contrast against the lighter masonry walls and brick façade of the home.

Flanking the staircase are rebuilt stone cheek walls that serve both structural and aesthetic purposes. These walls help retain the adjacent soil and define the stair corridor, giving the entryway a more intentional and symmetrical appearance. The masonry was installed using natural stone with varied sizing to create a traditional, hand-laid look that blends with the surrounding streetscape.

Existing metal railings were preserved and integrated into the new masonry work. Careful coordination was required to align railing posts with the rebuilt steps and cheek walls, ensuring proper anchorage without compromising the stonework. The railings now sit cleanly atop the finished masonry, providing necessary support while enhancing the visual rhythm of the staircase.

In addition to the stairs, the project included the reconstruction of adjacent planter and retaining walls along the sidewalk edge. These low stone walls frame the planting beds and help manage grade changes between the sidewalk and front yard. The tops were finished with stone caps that provide durability and a clean termination line, while also allowing the walls to double as informal seating.

The planting areas behind the walls were regraded and prepared for future landscaping. This not only improves drainage but also gives the homeowner flexibility to add plantings without compromising the integrity of the masonry. The rebuilt walls create a clear separation between pedestrian space and the property while maintaining an inviting appearance.

Urban masonry projects often require working within tight site constraints, and this project was no exception. Access to the work area was limited, requiring careful staging of materials and precise execution to avoid damage to adjacent sidewalks and neighboring properties. Despite these challenges, the work was completed with minimal disruption and a strong focus on cleanliness and site organization.

Drainage and longevity were key considerations throughout the rebuild. Proper base preparation beneath the steps and walls ensures stability and resistance to settlement. The masonry joints were tooled to promote water shedding and reduce moisture intrusion, extending the lifespan of the installation in a freeze-thaw environment.

The finished staircase dramatically improves both the safety and visual presence of the home’s front entry. What was once a worn and uneven access point is now a solid, well-defined masonry feature that enhances curb appeal and adds long-term value to the property. The craftsmanship reflects a focus on precision, durability, and respect for the existing architectural context.
