Project Description

This project involved the construction of a multi-level stone terrace system designed to manage grade changes while creating a functional and visually striking outdoor living space. Built on a sloped property with limited access, the work required precise planning, careful sequencing, and a strong emphasis on structural integrity. The finished result blends natural stone textures with clean geometry and flowing curves that guide movement through the space.

The centerpiece of the project is the expansive stone-paved terrace that serves as the primary gathering area. Large-format natural stone was selected for its durability, slip resistance, and subtle color variation. The stones were laid in a balanced, staggered pattern that avoids harsh repetition while maintaining visual consistency across the surface. Attention was paid to joint alignment and spacing to ensure long-term performance and proper water shedding.

Framing the terrace are a series of curved retaining walls that define the perimeter and retain the surrounding grade. These walls were constructed using natural stone veneer over a reinforced masonry core, allowing for both strength and aesthetic flexibility. The curved geometry softens the overall layout and creates a sense of flow between different elevations of the property.

Each retaining wall is topped with precision-cut stone caps that provide a clean termination and protect the wall structure from moisture intrusion. The caps follow the curvature of the walls seamlessly, requiring careful layout and individual fitting. This level of detail elevates the project from standard hardscaping to true custom masonry.

A central stair system connects the lower terrace to the upper grade, serving as both a functional transition and a visual focal point. The steps feature stone treads and risers sized for comfortable use and consistent elevation. The stair design integrates naturally with the retaining walls, appearing carved into the landscape rather than added as an afterthought.

Drainage was a critical consideration throughout the build. Weep openings were incorporated into the retaining walls to relieve hydrostatic pressure, and the base layers beneath the stone flatwork were carefully compacted and graded. These measures ensure long-term stability and reduce the risk of settlement or movement over time.

Working conditions on this site required coordination around ongoing construction activity, equipment staging, and material deliveries. Despite these challenges, the masonry installation maintained tight tolerances and consistent craftsmanship across all visible surfaces. The stonework aligns cleanly at transitions, corners, and tie-ins with adjacent structures.

The overall design balances form and function. The terraces provide usable outdoor space, while the retaining walls stabilize the landscape and define planting zones. The curved layout creates visual interest from multiple viewpoints, making the space feel intentional and cohesive rather than segmented.

Upon completion, the project transformed an uneven, underutilized area into a refined stone environment suitable for entertaining, circulation, and long-term enjoyment. The materials and construction methods were selected to withstand weather exposure while maintaining their appearance over time. This project reflects a commitment to quality masonry, thoughtful design, and durable construction.
